The source of the 28 items, the four seven-item subscales, the response format, and the norms used on the result page. The instrument is distributed by its first author under the heading “In the Public Domain — available without permission”, which is why it can be implemented here and checked against the source.

The better-known three-trait predecessor, and the measure most people mean by “dark triad test”. It is not the instrument used here: its author’s measures page no longer lists it under any permission heading, so there is no current statement granting its use, and the SD4 supersedes it.

Why these traits are described here as subclinical and continuous rather than as categories. The dark traits are ordinary dimensions on which everyone falls somewhere, and they overlap with each other rather than forming distinct types of person.

The basis for this site’s insistence that trait narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder are different things measured in different ways. Self-report trait scales and clinical diagnosis of NPD do not interchange, and treating a questionnaire score as a diagnosis is the most common misuse of this literature.
