The source of the 33 items and of the single total score used here. Items 5, 28 and 33 are reverse-scored. The authors developed and validated the scale as one global measure; that is why no subscales are reported.

One of several proposed multi-factor readings of the Schutte scale. It is cited here to explain why this test does not use one: the proposed structures disagree with each other, and no settled item-to-factor key is published, so any subscales shown would be invented rather than sourced.

The source of the 16 items and of the four subscales — Self-Emotion Appraisal, Others' Emotion Appraisal, Use of Emotion, and Regulation of Emotion — reported on the result page. Unlike the Schutte scale, these subscales are defined and validated by the instrument's own authors.

Why this page is careful about what a self-report emotional-intelligence score means. Self-report and ability-based measures of emotional intelligence correlate only modestly with each other, and self-report measures overlap substantially with ordinary personality traits.
